The two played together on the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals from 1955 to 1958 until Stokes’ career was cut short after suffering a head injury from a fall during a game against the Minneapolis Lakers.
The award was created in 2013 and is named after Jack Twyman and Muarice Stokes, and the story behind the award is truly heartwarming. The award recognizes the player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to team.
